BPM to Delay Time Calculator
Enter a tempo and read off the delay time for every note division.
| Note | Straight | Dotted | Triplet |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/1 | 0.52 Hz | 0.34 Hz | 0.78 Hz |
| 1/2 | 1.03 Hz | 0.69 Hz | 1.55 Hz |
| 1/4 | 2.07 Hz | 1.38 Hz | 3.10 Hz |
| 1/8 | 4.13 Hz | 2.76 Hz | 6.20 Hz |
| 1/16 | 8.27 Hz | 5.51 Hz | 12.40 Hz |
| 1/32 | 16.53 Hz | 11.02 Hz | 24.80 Hz |
The formula
A quarter note lasts 60,000 divided by the BPM, in milliseconds. A dotted note is 1.5 times that, and a triplet is two thirds of it.
Using it
Set a delay's time to a note value so the echoes land on the grid. Dotted eighths against a straight beat give the classic rolling delay.
Questions
Why dotted and triplet?
They create rhythms that sit between the straight divisions and are common for delays and gates.
